Understanding the UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
The Prelims stage is a screening test to filter candidates for the Mains exam. The marks obtained here do not count towards the final merit list.
- GS Paper I: 100 Questions, 200 Marks. Merit-based.
- CSAT (Paper II): 80 Questions, 200 Marks. Qualifying (33%).

Stage 2 & 3: Mains Examination and Interview
Candidates who clear the Prelims cut-off appear for the Mains written exam (1750 marks across 7 merit papers). The final stage is the Personality Test/Interview which carries 275 marks. The final rank is based on a grand total of 2025 marks.
